Utah Federation of College Republicans Passes Resolutions Supporting the Caucus Convention System and the Repeal of SB 54
SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The Utah Federation of College Republicans (UFCR) proudly announces the passage of two pivotal resolutions: one endorsing the Caucus Convention System Pledge and another calling for the full repeal of Senate Bill 54 (SB 54). These resolutions underscore our dedication to fortifying the Utah Republican Party’s grassroots nomination process and empowering its members.
The first resolution, "Caucus Convention System Pledge," commits UFCR to upholding Utah’s neighborhood caucus-convention system as the foundation of Republican candidate selection. This pledge celebrates the system’s ability to foster direct voter engagement, enable everyday Utahns to run for office, and ensure nominees reflect the party’s conservative values. “The caucus-convention system is Utah’s political heartbeat,” said Tyler Boyles, Incoming UFCR Chairman. “It’s where our principles are forged through debate and dedication—not dictated by outside cash.”
The second resolution, "Support for the Repeal of SB 54," urges the Utah Legislature to abolish the 2014 law that created a dual-path nomination system, allowing candidates to bypass the caucus-convention process through signature gathering. UFCR members argue that SB 54 erodes the party’s autonomy by reducing the influence of committed delegates and favoring well-funded candidates over grassroots conservatives. “Repealing SB 54 is critical to preserving the right of Utah Republicans to choose our nominees without government overreach,” said USU Chairman Chayse Leavitt. “We want a party driven by its people, not its pocketbooks.”
The Utah Federation of College Republicans, representing chapters from the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Weber State University, and Utah State University, calls on lawmakers and party members to back these resolutions in the 2025 legislative session. Together, we strive to safeguard the integrity of Utah’s Republican nomination process for years to come.
